Review by Nicole in Germany

A very special gift for a very special period of life

"The book Prayerfully Expecting is an outstanding book on the period of pregnancy. It gives you both useful information on what is going on inside of you (which I, being a doctor myself, especially appreciated) and spiritual guidance. It really helped me to firm my relationship to my child in the first weeks and months.

Written as a nine-month novena it is easy to pray. Additionally, I have to mention the beautiful illustrations by the author´s daughter, Chaldea Emerson. I haven´t seen any similar book in Germany, where I live, so far."

Thank you very much, Nicole for your fine review. I am very happy that my book served you well. May God bless you and your beautiful new baby and your family in great abundance!

The Eleventh Hour Video by Fr. Corapi

EWTN's Fr. Corapi just made a video regarding the upcoming election. His video expounds upon what Bishop Rene H. Gracida boldly stated in a recent radio spot. (He is the Bishop that ordained Fr. Corapi a Deacon).

Bishop Rene H. Gracida's statement:
"This is Bishop Rene H. Gracida, reminding all Catholics that they must vote in this election with an informed conscience. A Catholic cannot be said to have voted in this election with a good conscience if they have voted for a pro-abortion candidate. Barack Hussein Obama is a pro-abortion candidate."

You can view Fr. Corapi's video by clicking here. It's in 3short segments. It's very good and I encourage you to watch it and pass it on to your friends and family.

Borders Book Signing for my Two New Books!

Well, my two new books are now officially launched! They are The Domestic Church: Room by Room and Grace Cafe: Serving Up Recipes for Faithful Mothering.

The best part of the book signing was shortly after my daughter, Jessica arrived from the train from college. She was able to steal away some time from college for my celebration. Jessica hadn't seen my books yet because she was away. So, she picked them up and started to flip through them with her sister, Mary-Catherine. They were reading them at my table! Jessica teasingly said, "Hey! There's a whole blurb in here (The Domestic Church) on Mary-Catherine!" And I said, "Jess, there's a whole blurb on you in Grace Cafe about when you went to India." :) As they read parts about themselves, they smiled or laughed. I tried to capture it with my camera, however, instead I got a couple of hamming it up pictures. :) But it was lots of fun! Of course, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the people who came to my table.

Afterwards, we went out to a favorite Japanese restaurant to have a hibachi dinner to celebrate. We enjoyed our time together, and had lots of laughs. I tried a glass of plum wine for the first time and found it to be delicious!

The only bad part about the day was that I was missing my son, Joseph who couldn't make it home from college this time since he had so much going on with midterms, essays, newspaper meetings, and rehearsals for a play. But we'll soon be together at a celebration in his honor at his college for being on the Dean's list! Way to go, Joseph!

By the way, the daughter all the way to the right in the restaurant picture is my famous illustrator, Chaldea! She illustrated the cover of my new book, The Domestic Church: Room by Room! She has also illustrated my Prayerfully Expecting book and parts of The Heart of Motherhood!

Heaven Isn’t Too Far Away

All Saints Day Reminds Us What’s at Stake — and Within Reach

BY JOSEPH PRONECHEN

October 26-November 1, 2008 Issue | Posted 10/21/08 at 9:48 AM

All Saints Day, a solemn feast of the Church, is practically as old as the saints themselves. Its roots reach to the fourth century, when the Church began celebrating a common day for all martyrs. In the eighth and ninth centuries, Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV set the celebration for Nov. 1 and extended it to commemorate not just the martyred, but also all persons, known and unknown, whose sanctity in this life assured them a place in heaven for all eternity.

Members of the “Church Militant” — that would be us — can thus be assured that the “Church Triumphant” is praying for our salvation with the power of the full beatific vision before them.

Maybe even more important, their feast reminds us of the Church’s unmistakable nudge to our consciences: If those everyday folks could do it, so can we. “‘All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity,’ the Catechism reminds us (No. 2013). “All are called to holiness …”

“When we think of saints, we tend to think of the greatest ones — martyrs, mystics, founders of religious orders,” says author Thomas Craughwell. “Few of us are going to do what they did. But heaven is crowded with saints we do not know, ordinary people who became saints.” Craughwell’s books include Saints Behaving Badly: The Cutthroats, Crooks, Trollops, Con Men, and Devil-Worshippers Who Became Saints (Doubleday, 2006) and This Saint’s for You!: 300 Heavenly Allies Who Will Change Your Life (Quirk Books, 2007); he’s also online at TomCraughwell.com. He points to the heroic holiness of unknowns such as St. Zita, a 13th-century housekeeper — and to the often-overlooked humanity of the most celebrated.

St. Joseph, for example, is one of the most important figures in salvation history. Yet, Craughwell points out, “He’s not a martyr or a mystic. He doesn’t say a single word in the Gospels, and he performs no miracles. He’s a family man, a working man — but he’s completely faithful in obeying the will of God.”

Easier said than done? Sure. But absolutely doable, as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta daily reminded us by her words and her actions. Catholic writer and speaker Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, who knew Mother Teresa as a friend, says she often quotes a slice of simple wisdom that the saintly nun frequently repeated: “Holiness is not the luxury of a few. It is everyone’s duty: yours and mine.”

Cooper O’Boyle, author of two new books on Catholic mothering and homemaking (both published by the Register’s sister company Circle Press; see CirclePress.org and DonnaCooperOboyle.com), stresses that she strives to live Blessed Teresa’s message not only in her work, but also in her vocation as a wife and mother... (Continued here)

Appropriate words for our nation from the late Pope Paul VI

"If evils increase, the devotion of the People of God should also increase. And so, venerable brothers, we want you to take the lead in urging and encouraging people to pray ardently to our most merciful mother Mary by saying the Rosary during the month of October."~Pope Paul VI

Let's hope that tons of rosaries are being said about our nation's election!

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.--St. Teresa of Avila

I will be on EWTN's Bookmark TV show on Sunday

Check out this Sunday's EWTN's Bookmark show for a segment with me interviewed by the wonderful Doug Keck! It will air at 9:30 AM Eastern Standard Time.

“The thread running through both of your books on preparing for motherhood,” Doug says to author Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, “is John Paul II’s observation that women are more capable than men of paying attention to another person, and that motherhood develops this predisposition even more.” Both Prayerfully Expecting and The Heart of Motherhood stress the important role women play as a source of love, guidance, solace, and comfort for all around her. Cooper O’Boyle indeed seeks to restore pride to the title of “mother” in our world, and her commitment to promoting the dignity of women is captured on this week’s Bookmark."

Doug and I also discuss my books, Catholic Prayer Book for Mothers and Cathilc Saints Prayer Book

For more information go to EWTN's Bookmark website here.

God bless!

Beautiful feast day today: Our Lady of the Rosary

What a beautiful day today is! The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

"Pope St. Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716.
The development of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus' life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary's giving the rosary to St. Dominic is recognized as unhistorical, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of St. Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as "the apostle of the rosary." He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries (joyful, sorrowful and glorious). In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the Mysteries of Light to this devotion." Our Guardian Angels

On this feast of the Guardian Angels I'd like to take a moment to reflect on these powerful intercessors and friends.

My friend and former spiritual director, Fr. John A. Hardon SJ (now deceased) has said in his book, Theology of Prayer (St. Paul Editions) "The angels are pure spirits who have no bodies like our own but they are persons no less than we. They are intelligent beings whom God has brought into being to praise, love and serve Him no less than us. They are the angels who proved their loyalty to God and are now in heaven with God, never to be separated from him. Their role in God's plan for the universe, and how this bears emphasis, is to serve our needs. They are literally the guardians of the human race. And it is part of our faith that each one of us has his or her own guardian spirit...Within the realm of created beings the angels are more like God because they are pure creatures having no body, but they are also like us because we too have a mind and a will, so we can talk to the angels. The angels are providential intermediaries between God, whose vision they already enjoy, and mankind, whom they are entrusted to lead to the vision not yet attained. We therefore have not only the privilege but the duty to talk with the angels in easy, intimate and frequent conversation."

Are we conversing with out Guardian Angels? Frequently? We should be. They are our friends and powerful intercessors! Most of us have no idea of the magnitude of the blessing of the Angels. We should not squander the privilege of conversation with them. They help us immensely. We can send our Angel before us in the case of an important meeting or situation. Our Angel will "pave the way." We should teach our children to pray to their Guardian Angels frequently. As a parent, we can pray to our infant's and children's Guardian Angels on their behalf. Each family has a separate Guardian Angel that watches over the family too.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Take a look at this!

Roses for St. Therese!

(roses from my garden)
***

"O my Beloved, this grace was only the prelude to the greatest graces You wished to bestow upon me. Allow me, my only Love, to recall them to You today, today which is the sixth anniversary of our union. Ah, my Jesus, pardon me if I am unreasonable in wishing to express my desires and longings which reach even unto infinity. Pardon me and heal my soul by giving her what she longs for so much!

To be Your Spouse, to be a Carmelite, and by my union with You to be the Mother of souls, should not this suffice me? And yet it is not so. No doubt, these three privileges sum up my true vocation: Carmelite, Spouse, Mother, and yet I feel within me other vocations. I feel the vocation of the warrior, the priest, the apostle, the doctor, the martyr. Finally, I feel the need and the desire of carrying out the most heroic deeds for You, O Jesus. I feel within my soul the courage of the crusader, the papal guard, and I would want to die on the field of battle in defense of the Church... (Continued at Fr. James's blog)
